Resurrecting Old Paintings (Someone else’s)

Once in a while, there are give-a-ways at our Art League.  One can find some real bargains, and some are better left behind.  Well, this time, because I was not there at the time of distribution, my goodies came in a black garbage bag.  It was canvasses and other materials on which to paint.  (Canvasses are always welcome at my house.)

Usually, one cannot paint acrylics over oils, but if the oils are old enough, it works fine, as you can see from the picture that I painted today.  The image size is 8×10 inches and the theme is “Anything Musical.”  The painting is being donated the Brevard Music Center, for its fund-raising auction for the June – August 2009 season. (Fig. 1.)

The figure is taken from one of my 5×7 (matted to 8×10 watercolors. Fig. 2.) of man.)  If you look carefully, you will see a very small bird (lower left), a cat (shadow of guitar player) and musical notes, staffs and other musical symbols throughout.  I used only four colors: alizarin crimson (red), cadmium yellow and ultramarine blue, and white.
